Taiwan reports 16,571 new COVID-19 cases, 59 deaths

Taipei, Nov. 19 (CNA) Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) reported 16,571 new COVID-19 infections on Saturday, all but 57 of which were locally transmitted, and 59 deaths from the disease.

The deceased ranged in age from their 50s to their 90s, and all of them had underlying health issues, while 29 were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.

Meanwhile, the CECC also reported 82 new cases classified as moderate and 56 as severe.

MIS-C cases

The severe cases include two young girls under the age of 10 who developed multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), according to the CECC.

One is a 3-year-old who did not have any underlying chronic issues and had gotten one vaccine jab, while the other is an unvaccinated 5-year-old who tested positive for COVID-19 on Oct. 13 and subsequently developed symptoms of fever and rash in the torso and lower limbs, the CECC said.

It added that the two young patients are currently being hospitalized for treatment at ordinary wards.

Meanwhile, the CECC said, the 16,514 new domestic cases reported on Saturday represented a 13.9-percent drop from a week earlier.

Regional breakdown

New Taipei reported the highest number of new cases on Saturday, with 2,679, followed by Taichung with 2,219 and Kaohsiung with 2,184.

Taoyuan reported 1,695 cases, Tainan 1,632, Taipei 1,464, Changhua County 800, Pingtung County 553, Hsinchu County 491, Yunlin County 423, Hsinchu City 406 and Miaoli County 375.

Chiayi County had 296 cases, Nantou County 294, Yilan County 243, Keelung 213, Chiayi City 182, Hualien County 174, Taitung County 108, Kinmen 47, Penghu 33 and the Matsu islands three, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 8,146,790 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 37,218 classified as imported.

With the 59 deaths reported on Saturday, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 13,907.
