Taipei, Oct. 25 (CNA) Taiwan reported 39,203 new COVID-19 infections, including 55 imported cases, and 42 deaths from the disease on Tuesday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The deceased ranged in age from their 50s to their 90s, and all but three had underlying health issues, while 24 had not been vaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.

The 39,203 new infections represented a 12.7-percent week-on-week drop in the number of cases, the CECC said.

Moreover, the 8,315 prescriptions of oral drugs made on Monday were also lower than the same day in the previous three weeks, showing that the pandemic has decreased, the CECC stated.

On Tuesday, the CECC also reported 22 cases that were newly classified as moderate and 31 as severe, including a 9-year-old boy who had gotten two vaccine doses.

Despite the boy having no underlying chronic issues, he started developing asthma as well as other symptoms like fever, cough, and sore throat, after contracting the disease. He was discharged from the hospital after having responded positively to treatment, the CECC stated.

So far, there have been 254 severe cases in children aged 12 and under and 37 deaths in that age group, the CECC added.
