Taipei, Oct. 23 (CNA) Taiwan reported 35,365 new COVID-19 infections, including 43 imported cases, and 65 deaths from the disease on Sunday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The fatalities ranged in age from four months to their 90s. All but seven had underlying health issues and 30 had not been vaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.

The youngest death was a 4-month-old unvaccinated boy with no underlying health issues, Deputy Head of the CECC's Medical Response Division Lo Yi-chun (羅一鈞) said in a pre-recorded video.

The boy had a positive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test on Oct. 10, developed a fever and was rushed to an emergency ward, where he improved after being treated. He was discharged on Oct. 15, Lo noted.

However, the infant was re-hospitalized on Oct. 19 after developing another fever on Oct. 18, and was diagnosed with sepsis after a doctor found swollen lymph nodes in his neck, along with low blood pressure, dyspnea and mottled skin, Lo said.

The boy's condition deteriorated despite treatment, and he died after experiencing complicated septic shock on Oct. 20, Lo said, adding that the child had ear discharge when in the hospital, but it is unclear whether that caused the sepsis.

The deceased infant is the fourth to contract sepsis among the 253 recorded severe cases in children aged 12 and under, and the third fatality from sepsis out of 37 deaths among children in that age group, according to CECC data.

The 35,322 new domestic infections represent a 15 percent drop week-on-week, while also marking the fourth consecutive day with fewer than 40,000 infections, Lo said.

The CECC also reported 69 cases that were newly classified as severe and 110 as moderate.

As of Sunday, the total number of COVID-19 fatalities in the country since the start of the pandemic is 12,323.
