
Taiwan reports 39,808 new COVID-19 cases, 92 deaths

Taipei, Oct. 20 (CNA) Taiwan reported 39,808 new COVID-19 infections, including 45 imported cases, and 92 deaths from the disease Thursday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
While Thursday's domestic infections represented a 25.5 percent week-over-week drop, the CECC said people should continue observing related rules.
The deaths reported Thursday involved people aged from their 30s to their 90s and represented the highest number of daily fatalities involving the BA.5 subvariant of COVID-19.
According to the CECC, 30 of those who died had not received any doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.
As of Thursday, the number of COVID-19 fatalities in the country since the start of the pandemic now stands at 12,128.
The CECC also reported 124 cases classified as moderate and 80 as severe, including two cases involving multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).
The two MIS-C cases involve a fully vaccinated 5-year-old boy with a congenital heart defect and a fully vaccinated 9-year-old girl with no underlying health issues, the CECC said.
Both children have been discharged from hospital after responding well to treatment, according to the CECC.
Regional breakdown
On Thursday, New Taipei reported the highest number of new COVID-19 infections, with 7,431, while Taichung had 5,196, Kaohsiung 4,687, Taoyuan 4,062, Taipei 3,781 and Tainan 3,394, according to the CECC.
Changhua County recorded 2,191 cases, Pingtung County 1,384, Hsinchu County 909, Yunlin County 869, Hsinchu City 869, Miaoli County 828, Nantou County 728 and Yilan County 686.
Chiayi County reported 684 cases, Keelung 552, Hualien County 480, Chiayi City 468, Taitung County 269, Kinmen County 139, Penghu County 136, and the Matsu Islands 20, according to CECC data.
Taiwan has recorded 7,341,966 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 35,899 classified as imported.
