Taiwan reports 44,628 new COVID-19 cases, 42 deaths

Taipei, Oct. 19 (CNA) Taiwan reported 44,628 new COVID-19 infections, including 27 imported cases, and 42 deaths from the disease Wednesday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The number of new domestic infections marked a 0.5 percent drop from Tuesday and a 14.7 percent decline from a week ago.

The fatalities reported Wednesday were people who ranged in age from their 30s to 90s, and 29 of them had received fewer than three COVID-19 vaccination shots, the CECC said.

With the 42 new deaths, the number of COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 12,038 since the start of the pandemic.

The CECC also reported 44 cases classified as moderate and 127 as severe.

Regional breakdown

On Wednesday, New Taipei reported the highest number of new COVID-19 infections, with 8,590, while Taichung had 5,867, Kaohsiung 5,142, Taoyuan 4,545, Taipei 4,315, and Tainan 3,742, according to the CECC.

Changhua County recorded 2,369 cases, Pingtung County 1,452, Yunlin County 1,033, Hsinchu City 1,000, Miaoli County 988, Hsinchu County 986, Yilan County 783, and Nantou County 740.

Chiayi County reported 732 cases, Keelung 695, Chiayi City 519, Hualien County 484, Taitung County 278, Kinmen County 170, Penghu County 151, and the Matsu Islands 20, according to CECC data.

Taiwan has recorded 7,302,188 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 35,856 classified as imported.
