Taipei, Oct. 18 (CNA) Taiwan reported 44,884 new COVID-19 infections and 33 deaths from the disease Tuesday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The 44,884 newly reported infections were up 8.4 percent from the same day last week, the CECC said in a statement. Week-to-week rather than day-to-day comparisons are used because case numbers tend to be lower on Mondays and weekends.
The latest figures suggest that the pandemic in Taiwan is still plateauing, the CECC warned, and it said people should continue to observe pandemic prevention rules.
The deceased reported Tuesday ranged in age from their 60s to 90s. All but six had underlying health issues, and 17 had not received any COVID-19 vaccine jabs, the CECC added.
With the 33 deaths reported Tuesday, the number of COVID-19 fatalities in the country since the pandemic started in early 2020 stands at 11,994.
The steady number of COVID-19 deaths per day in recent weeks has pushed the disease's death rate in Taiwan to 501.30 deaths per million population, according to Our World in Data.
The ratio was higher than that for Singapore, Japan, New Zealand, Vietnam and Thailand among Asia-Pacific economies.
The CECC also reported 33 cases classified as moderate and 69 as severe, without any severe cases among children under 12 years old.
