Taiwan reports 41,541 new COVID-19 cases, 65 deaths

Taipei, Oct. 16 (CNA) Taiwan reported 41,541 new COVID-19 infections and 65 deaths from the disease Sunday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The 41,541 newly reported infections meant that cases declined 6.7 percent week-over-week, the CECC said in a statement.

The deceased ranged in age from their 30s to 90s. All but one had underlying health issues, and 31 of them had not received any COVID-19 vaccine jabs, the CECC added.

With the 65 deaths reported Sunday, the number of COVID-19 fatalities in the country since the pandemic started in early 2020 stands at 11,908.

Severe, moderate cases

The CECC also reported 66 cases classified as severe and 121 as moderate.

One of the severe cases involved a fully vaccinated 13-year-old girl diagnosed with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), CECC spokesperson Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) said in a pre-recorded video.

Chuang added that the girl was discharged from hospital Thursday after responding well to treatment.

Taiwan has recorded 21 cases of teenagers suffering severe complications due to COVID-19, six of whom have died, Chuang said.

In addition, there has been 36 recorded deaths among the 247 children in Taiwan aged 12 and under classified as severe COVID-19 infections, Chuang said.

Regional breakdown

On Sunday, New Taipei reported the highest number of new COVID-19 infections, with 7,887, while Taichung had 5,340, Kaohsiung 4,709, Taoyuan 4,216, Taipei 4,145, and Tainan 3,453, according to the CECC.

Changhua County had 2,134 cases, Pingtung County 1,346, Hsinchu County 1,025, Yunlin County 1,024, Hsinchu City 927, Miaoli County 871, Yilan County 807 and Chiayi County 799.

Nantou County reported 684 cases, Keelung City 610, Hualien County 496, Chiayi City 464, Taitung County 241, Kinmen County 157, Penghu County 135, and the Matsu Islands 11, according to CECC data.

Taiwan has recorded 7,183,912 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 35,763 classified as imported cases.
