Taiwan records 53,356 new COVID-19 cases, as infections top 7 million

Taipei, Oct. 13 (CNA) Taiwan reported 53,356 new COVID-19 infections and 29 deaths from the disease Thursday, bringing total domestic cases past 7 million, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

Thursday's daily new cases increased 14.9 percent week-over-week, ending a three-day streak of declines, Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Deputy Director-General Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) said at a press briefing.

With 29 deaths reported on Thursday, the number of COVID-19 fatalities in Taiwan reached 11,686 since the pandemic began in early 2020, according to the CECC.

The CECC also reported 27 cases classified as severe and 115 as moderate.

One MIS-C case

Among the newly reported severe cases was an 8-year-old boy without any chronic diseases who had gotten one vaccine jab, the CECC stated.

The CECC said the boy was diagnosed with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), and was discharged from hospital on Sept. 28 after responding well to treatment.

To date, 158 of the 244 COVID-19 severe cases involving children aged 12 and younger have been diagnosed with MIS-C, a rare complication of COVID-19.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei reported the highest number of new infections on Thursday with 10,303, while Taichung had 6,775, Taoyuan 5,729, Kaohsiung 5,643, Taipei 5,547, and Tainan 4,235, according to the CECC.

Changhua County had 2,585 cases, Pingtung County 1,776, Hsinchu County 1,426, Yunlin County 1,314, Miaoli County 1,196, Hsinchu City 1,171, Yilan County 1,122, and Chiayi County 935.

Keelung City had 835 cases, Nantou County 745, Hualien County 666, Chiayi City 587, Taitung County 407, Kinmen County 182, Penghu County 158 and the Matsu Islands 19, the CECC said in a statement.

Taiwan has recorded 7,050,750 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 35,627 cases classified as imported.
