Taipei, Oct. 9 (CNA) Taiwan reported 44,565 new COVID-19 infections and 62 deaths from the disease Sunday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The deceased ranged in age from their 30s to 90s. All but four had underlying health issues, and 34 had not received any COVID-19 vaccine doses, the CECC said in a statement.

The youngest person reported to have died Sunday because of COVID-19 was a 30-year-old lady who had no chronic health issues and had gotten two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine and a booster shot, CECC spokesperson Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) said.

After testing positive using a rapid test on Sept. 30, she was found in a coma at home by her family on Oct. 5 and had no vital signs when she was first checked at the hospital, before being pronounced dead later the same day.

The hospital later determined COVID-19 to be the main cause of death.

With the 62 deaths reported on Sunday, the number of COVID-19 fatalities in Taiwan reached 11,527 since the pandemic began in early 2020, according to the CECC.

The CECC also reported 73 cases that were newly classified as severe and 140 as moderate.

In terms of overall cases, it was the 14th consecutive day in which total case numbers were higher than on the same day in the previous week, and total deaths this week were 8.7 percent higher than last week.

Despite the steady rise in case numbers over the past two weeks, the government is still planning to open Taiwan's borders on Oct. 13.

Also on Sunday, there was one new reported case of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), involving a five-year-old girl without any chronic diseases who had gotten one vaccine jab, Chuang said.

She steadily improved after being treated with medications such as steroids, however, and was discharged from the hospital on Thursday, Chuang said.

Regionally, New Taipei reported the highest number of new infections on Sunday with 8,730, while Taichung had 5,379, Taoyuan 4,888, Taipei 4,580, Kaohsiung 4,487, and Tainan 3,238, the CECC said.
