Taiwan reports 44,534 new COVID-19 cases, 76 deaths

Taipei, Oct. 8 (CNA) Taiwan reported 44,534 new COVID-19 infections and 76 deaths from the disease Saturday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The deceased ranged in age from their 40s to 90s. All but five had underlying health issues, and 39 had not received any COVID-19 vaccine doses, the CECC said in a statement.

With the 76 deaths reported on Saturday, the highest single-day total since July 22, the number of COVID-19 fatalities in the country reached 11,465, according to the CECC.

The CECC also reported 72 cases that were newly classified as severe and 113 as moderate.

In terms of overall cases, it was the 13th consecutive day in which total case numbers were higher than on the same day in the previous week.

The 364 deaths reported in the week ending Sunday were also 18.57 percent higher than those reported the previous week.

CECC spokesperson Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) said there were no new reported cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).

According to the latest CECC data, a total of 239 children in Taiwan aged 12 and under have developed severe illnesses after contracting COVID-19, including 154 MIS-C cases, 32 cases of brain inflammation (encephalitis), 25 with pneumonia, three with septicemia, and others with various complications.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei reported the highest number of new infections on Saturday with 8,826, while Taichung had 5,375, Taipei 4,879, Taoyuan 4,630, Kaohsiung 4,520, and Tainan 3,231, the CECC said.

Changhua County had 2,303 new cases, Pingtung County 1,223, Hsinchu County 1,180, Miaoli County 1,155, Yunlin County 1,107, Yilan County 1,082, Hsinchu City 960 and Keelung City 834.

Chiayi County had 765 new cases, Nantou County 715, Hualien County 651, Chiayi City 459, Taitung County 295, Penghu County 148, Kinmen County 109, and the Matsu Islands 20, according to the CECC.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 6,826,989 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 35,316 classified as imported.
