Taipei, Oct. 6 (CNA) Taiwan reported 46,484 new COVID-19 infections and 57 deaths from the disease Thursday, including a 1-year-old child who was unvaccinated, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The deceased ranged in age from under 2 to over 90 years old. All but four had underlying health issues and 33 had not received any COVID-19 vaccine doses, the CECC said in a statement.

Deaths, severe cases

Among the deaths was an unvaccinated 1-year-old boy with no prior chronic health issues who tested positive for COVID-19 on Sept. 27, CDC Deputy Director-General Lo Yi-chun (羅一鈞) said.

According to Lo, the boy, who developed a cough and fever on Sept. 24, was hospitalized on Sept. 28 after he began suddenly convulsing.

The infant was diagnosed with hydrocephalus and encephalitis following a CT scan, and passed away in the hospital's intensive care unit on Sept. 30, Lo said.

Lo said parents should immediately seek medical attention if their child develops convulsions, loss of consciousness, difficulty breathing, white or purple lips, cold limbs, or a cold sweat following a positive COVID-19 diagnosis.

In addition, prompt medical treatment should also be sought in COVID-19 cases with a fever above 39 degrees or lasting more than 48 hours, or persistent shortness of breath, vomiting, headaches, mobility issues, and abdominal pain after a fever subsides, Lo added.

With the 57 deaths reported on Thursday, the number of COVID-19 fatalities in the country has reached 11,337, according to the CECC.

The CECC also reported 61 cases that were newly classified as severe and 150 as moderate.

One of the new severe cases involves an unvaccinated 3-year-old boy who developed multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), according to Lo.

The boy, who had contracted the disease in June, was hospitalized on Sept. 29 but was discharged on Wednesday after responding positively to treatment, Lo said.
