Taipei, Sept. 24 (CNA) Taiwan reported 38,371 new infections of COVID-19 and 51 deaths from the disease Saturday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The 51 deaths, which brought the total in Taiwan since the pandemic began to 10,794, consisted of people in their 40s to 90s, and all but three had underlying health issues such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, the CECC said.
According to the CECC data, 29 of them had not been vaccinated against the disease.
Also on Saturday, the CECC reported 71 new cases classified as "severe" and 113 new cases classified as "moderate."
MIS-C case
Among the severe cases was a boy aged three years old who had no history of chronic disease, CECC spokesman Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) said.
The child was diagnosed with COVID-19 on Aug. 16, but he only started to develop symptoms including abdominal pain, fever, and vomiting on Sept. 16, Chuang said, adding that the patient developed a rash on his face and torso three days later.
On Sept. 20, his parents brought him to an emergency ward where doctors treating him found that he had conjunctivitis and low blood pressure, so he was immediately taken that day to an intensive care unit, the CECC official added.
A hospital doctor later classified the young patient as having multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).
His conditions improved on Sept. 23 and he was later transferred to a general ward, where he continues to be treated, Chuang said.
