
Taiwan reports 41,296 new COVID-19 cases, 26 deaths

Taipei, Sept. 7 (CNA) Taiwan on Wednesday reported 41,296 new cases of COVID-19 and 26 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
It was the first time Taiwan had recorded over 40,000 new COVID-19 cases since June 29, when 42,204 were reported. Taiwan had not had a day during the pandemic in which new cases exceeded 40,000 until May 7, 2022, when 46,536 new cases were recorded.
The deceased reported Wednesday ranged in age from their 40s to their 90s. All but one suffered from chronic illnesses, and 10 had not received any COVID-19 vaccine shots, the CECC said.
Also on Wednesday, the CECC reported 37 cases newly classified as severe and 67 as moderate.
Of the 5,459,677 domestically transmitted cases recorded in Taiwan this year, 10,811 have been classified as severe infections and 13,830 as moderate, accounting for 0.20 percent and 0.25 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of Sept. 6.
Of those domestic cases reported Wednesday, 9,011 were reported in New Taipei, 5,684 in Taipei, 4,995 in Taichung, 4,638 in Taoyuan, 2,790 in Kaohsiung, and 2,310 in Tainan.
Changhua reported 1,622, Hsinchu County 1,291, while 1,220 were recorded in Hsinchu City, 1,017 in Miaoli, 998 in Pingtung, 842 in Keelung, 841 in Yilan, 790 in Hualien, 784 in Yunlin, 601 in Nantou, 541 in Chiayi County, 375 in Chiayi City, and 314 in Taitung.
Penghu reported 190, Kinmen 149 and the Matsu Islands 18, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 5,544,974 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 29,708 that were contracted abroad and classified as "imported" cases.
With the 26 deaths reported Wednesday, the number of COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 10,141 since the beginning of the pandemic.
