
Taiwan reports new 34,118 COVID-19 cases, 36 deaths

Taipei, Sept. 1 (CNA) Taiwan on Thursday reported 34,118 new cases of COVID-19 and 36 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The deceased ranged in age from their 20s to their 90s. All but three suffered from chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, and 16 were not fully vaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.
Also on Thursday, the CECC reported 36 COVID-19 cases newly classified as severe and 118 newly classified as moderate.
Of the 5,265,539 domestically transmitted cases recorded in Taiwan this year, 10,575 have been classified as severe infections and 13,473 as moderate, accounting for 0.20 percent and 0.26 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of Aug. 31.
Regional breakdown
Regionally, New Taipei reported the highest number of new cases Thursday, with 7,415, followed by Taipei with 4,317 and Taichung with 3,990.
Taoyuan had 3,536 new cases, Kaohsiung 2,710, Tainan 2,074, Changhua 1,495, Hsinchu County 1,086, Hsinchu City 965, Miaoli 915, Pingtung 783, Yunlin 684 and Yilan 626.
Hualien had 616 cases, Keelung 616, Nantou 577, Chiayi County 507, Chiayi City 377, Taitung 249, Penghu 160, Kinmen 158, and the Matsu Islands 19, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 5,342,106 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 5,313,991 domestic cases.
With the 36 deaths reported Thursday, the number of COVID-19 fatalities in the county rose to 9,950.
