
Taiwan reports 22,397 new COVID-19 cases, 26 deaths

Taipei, Aug. 21 (CNA) Taiwan on Sunday reported 22,397 new cases of COVID-19 and 26 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The deceased ranged in age from their 50s to their 90s. All but four suffered from chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, and 18 were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.
Also on Sunday, the CECC reported 22 COVID-19 cases newly classified as severe and 75 as moderate.
Of the 4,981,428 domestically transmitted cases recorded in Taiwan this year, 10,200 have been classified as severe infections and 12,763 as moderate, accounting for 0.20 percent and 0.26 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of Aug. 20.
Regional breakdown
Regionally, New Taipei reported the highest number of new cases on Sunday, with 4,852, followed by Taipei with 2,618 and Taichung with 2,556.
Taoyuan had 2,438 new cases, Kaohsiung 1,805, Tainan 1,345, Changhua 828, Hsinchu City 658, Hsinchu County 643, Pingtung 574, Yilan 536, Yunlin 466, and Keelung 432.
Nantou recorded 383 cases, Hualien 361, Chiayi County 330, Taitung 204, Chiayi City 192, Penghu 135, Kinmen 124 and the Matsu Islands eight, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 5,043,275 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 5,018,152 domestic infections.
With the 26 deaths reported Sunday, the number of COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 9,634.
