
Taiwan reports 24,873 new COVID-19 cases, 33 deaths

Taipei, Aug. 17 (CNA) Taiwan on Wednesday reported 24,873 new cases of COVID-19, all but 204 of which were domestic infections, and 33 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The deceased ranged in age from their 50s to their 90s. All but one suffered from chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, and 14 were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.
Also on Wednesday, the CECC reported 47 severe COVID-19 cases and 64 moderate infections.
Among the severe cases were two boys, aged 1 and 3, who were diagnosed with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) earlier this month but are now recovering in hospital, CECC official Lo Yi-chun (羅一鈞) said at a press conference.
To date, 170 children aged 12 and under have developed severe illnesses from COVID-19, including 100 cases of MIS-C, 27 cases of encephalitis, and 21 cases of pneumonia, and 27 have died, according to the CECC.
Of the 4,889,321 domestic cases recorded in Taiwan this year, 10,046 have been classified as severe infections and 12,107 as moderate, accounting for 0.21 percent and 0.25 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of Aug. 16.
Regionally, New Taipei reported the highest number of new cases on Wednesday, with 5,073, followed by Taipei with 3,054 and Taichung with 2,966.
Taoyuan had 2,793 new cases, Kaohsiung 2,015, Tainan 1,669, Changhua 982, Hsinchu County 726, Hsinchu City 724, Pingtung 655, Miaoli 648, Yunlin 540, and Yilan 531.
Hualien reported 465 cases, Nantou 423, Keelung 415, Chiayi County 338, Taitung 234, Chiayi City 234, Penghu 94, Kinmen 81, and the Matsu Islands nine, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 4,952,570 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 4,928,534 domestic infections.
With the 33 deaths reported Wednesday, the number of COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 9,506.
