
Taiwan reports 15,792 new COVID-19 cases, 22 deaths

Taipei, Aug. 15 (CNA) Taiwan on Monday reported 15,792 cases of COVID-19, all but 196 of which were domestic infections, and 22 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The deceased ranged in age from their 50s to their 90s. They all suffered from chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, and 12 were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.
Also on Monday, the CECC reported 11 severe COVID-19 cases and 22 moderate infections.
Of the 4,850,867 domestic cases recorded in Taiwan this year, 9,977 have been classified as severe infections and 12,385 as moderate, accounting for 0.21 percent and 0.25 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of Aug. 14.
Regional breakdown
Regionally, New Taipei reported the highest number of new cases on Monday, with 3,084, followed by Taoyuan with 1,973, and Taichung with 1,897.
Taipei had 1,789 new cases, Kaohsiung 1,286, Tainan 971, Changhua 686, Miaoli 521, Hsinchu County 494, Hsinchu City 362, Yunlin 361, Yilan 352, and Pingtung 348.
Hualien reported 274 cases, Nantou 267, Chiayi County 227, Keelung 227, Kinmen 126, Chiayi City 126, Taitung 121, Penghu 97, and the Matsu Islands 7, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 4,904,622 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 4,881,058 domestic infections.
With the 22 deaths reported Monday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 9,457.
