
Taiwan reports 21,289 new COVID-19 cases, 40 deaths

Taipei, Aug. 13 (CNA) Taiwan on Saturday reported 21,289 new cases of COVID-19 and 40 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The deceased ranged in age from their 30s to 90s. All suffered from chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, and 17 were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said in a statement.
Also on Saturday, the CECC reported 34 severe COVID-19 cases and 72 moderate infections.
Severe, moderate cases
Among the severe cases was a 1-year-old boy who developed laryngotracheobronchitis and three other boys -- aged 2, 3 and 5 -- who were diagnosed with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), said CECC spokesman Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) in a prerecorded video.
All of the boys, with the exception of the 5-year-old, are still undergoing treatment in hospital, Chuang added.
A total of 166 severe cases of COVID-19 involving children have been recorded to date, including nine laryngotracheobronchitis and 96 MIS-C, Chuang said, adding that a total of 27 children have died.
Of the 4,809,044 domestic cases reported in Taiwan this year, 9,921 have been classified as severe infections and 12,303 as moderate, accounting for 0.21 percent and 0.26 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of Aug. 12.
Regional breakdown
Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases on Friday, with 4,082, followed by Taichung with 2,534 and Taipei with 2,439.
Taoyuan had 2,327 new cases, Kaohsiung 1,744, Tainan 1,507, Changhua County 951, Hsinchu County 661, Miaoli County 618, Hsinchu City 518, Yunlin County 494, Pingtung County 491, Yilan County 452, Chiayi County 393, Nantou County 360, Keelung 341, Hualien County 311 and Penghu County 251.
Taitung County reported 232, Chiayi City 226, Kinmen County 108, and the Matsu Islands 16, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 4,867,766 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 4,844,683 domestic infections.
With the 40 deaths reported Saturday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 9,413.
