
Taiwan reports 23,808 new COVID-19 cases, 25 deaths

Taipei, Aug. 10 (CNA) Taiwan reported 23,808 new cases of COVID-19, all but 143 of which were domestic infections, and 25 deaths from the disease on Wednesday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The deceased ranged in age from their 30s to 90s. All but one suffered from chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, and 14 were not fully vaccinated (three shots) against COVID-19, the CECC said in a daily press briefing.
Severe, moderate cases
Also on Wednesday, the CECC reported 26 new severe COVID-19 cases and 59 moderate infections.
Of the 4,741,074 domestic cases reported in Taiwan this year, 9,791 have been classified as severe infections and 12,128 as moderate, accounting for 0.21 percent and 0.25 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of Aug. 9.
In all other cases, the infected persons were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms, the CECC said.
Regional breakdown
Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases on Wednesday, with 4,379, followed by Taichung with 2,962 and Taoyuan with 2,675.
Taipei reported 2,627 new cases, Kaohsiung 2,075, Tainan 1,703, Changhua County 1,056, Miaoli County 747, Hsinchu County 730, Hsinchu City 611, Pingtung County 565, Yilan County 546, and Yunlin County 517.
Hualien County reported 409 cases, Nantou County 398, Keelung 387, Chiayi County 359, Chiayi City 265, Penghu County 253, Taitung County 224, Kinmen County 161, and the Matsu islands 16 cases, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 4,801,676 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 4,779,305 domestic infections.
With the 25 deaths reported Wednesday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 9,298.
