Taipei, July 28 (CNA) Taiwan recorded 23,971 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, all but 149 of which were domestic infections, and 62 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The deceased ranged in age from their 40s to over 90. Twenty-four of those who died were unvaccinated, while 61 had chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, the CECC said.

The sole death who had no chronic illness or other severe diseases was unvaccinated, according to the CECC.

Also on Thursday, the CECC said that 55 previously reported COVID-19 cases had become severe, while 88 other individuals had developed moderate symptoms.

Severe cases involving children

Among the severe cases are five children, four of whom have been diagnosed with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), and one with pneumonia.

The four children with MIS-C range in age from 2 to 9 years old. They tested positive for COVID-19 between June 3 and July 3, and began to show symptoms of MIS-C in late July, including fever, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, decreased appetite, cough, rash, and bloodshot eyes, according to the CECC.

One of the children has also been diagnosed with acute appendicitis on top of MIS-C, the CECC said.

The four children are still receiving treatment in hospital, according to the CECC.

The child diagnosed with pneumonia is a 12-year-old with a genetic neuromuscular disease who requires long-term breathing support.

She developed a cough, sore throat and fever on July 22, and was taken to the hospital that same day. She was diagnosed with pneumonia and admitted to an intensive care unit, where she is still receiving treatment, the CECC said.

To date, 128 children under the age of 13 years have developed severe illnesses from COVID-19, of whom 25 have died, according to the CECC.

Of the 4,464,639 domestic cases reported in Taiwan this year, 9,200 have been classified as severe infections and 11,436 as moderate, accounting for 0.20 percent and 0.26 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of July 27.

In all other cases, the infected persons were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms, the CECC said.
