Taiwan reports 17,127 new COVID-19 cases, 53 deaths

Taipei, July 25 (CNA) Taiwan reported 17,127 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, all but 206 of which were domestic infections, and 53 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The individuals whose deaths were reported Monday ranged in age from 3 years old to over 90. Twenty-three of those who died were unvaccinated against COVID-19, while 48 had chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, the CECC said.

Among the five with no chronic illnesses or severe diseases, four were unvaccinated and one had received three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

The 3-year-old who passed away developed a persistent fever on July 21 and was taken to hospital the next day after she started losing consciousness off and on, the CECC said.

She was diagnosed with encephalitis and admitted to an intensive care unit, but her condition deteriorated on July 23 and she passed away that day, the CECC said.

Also on Monday, the CECC said that 45 previously reported COVID-19 cases had become severe, while 36 other individuals had developed moderate symptoms.

Among the severe cases is a 4-year-old boy who tested positive on June 13. On July 16, he developed a fever, sore throat, and loss of appetite, and he was taken to hospital three days later, where he was diagnosed with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), the CECC said.

The boy is still in hospital with symptoms that include a swollen tongue, bloodshot eyes, slightly swollen extremities, and low blood pressure, the CECC said.

To date, 118 children under the age of 13 years have developed severe illnesses from COVID-19, and 25 of them have died, according to the CECC.

Of the 4,397,462 domestic cases reported in Taiwan this year, 9,035 have been classified as severe infections, and 11,236 as moderate, accounting for 0.21 percent and 0.26 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of July 24.

In all other cases, the infected persons were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms, the CECC said.

On Monday, New Taipei recorded the highest number of domestic cases, with 2,955, followed by Taichung with 2,051 and Taoyuan with 1,847.

Kaohsiung recorded 1,767 cases, Taipei 1,727, Tainan 1,380, Changhua County 830, Hsinchu County 479, Miaoli County 478, Pingtung County 452, and Yunlin County 439.

Yilan County reported 361 cases, Chiayi County 337, Hsinchu City 336, Nantou County 324, Hualien County 309, Keelung 237, Chiayi City 182, Taitung County 171, Kinmen County 125, Penghu County 118, and the Matsu Islands 16.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 4,447,707 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 4,428,986 domestic infections.

With the 53 deaths reported Monday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 8,649.
