Taipei, July 24 (CNA) Taiwan reported 21,737 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, all but 277 of which were domestic infections, and 65 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The individuals whose deaths were reported Sunday ranged in age from their 50s to over 90. Thirty-two of those who died were unvaccinated, while 63 had chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, the CECC said.
The two who had no chronic illness or other severe diseases were unvaccinated, according to the CECC.
Also on Sunday, the CECC said that 58 previously reported COVID-19 cases had become severe, while 78 other individuals had developed moderate symptoms.
Severe cases involving minors
Among the severe cases is a 2-year-old who has been diagnosed with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, said Lo Yi-chun (羅一鈞), deputy head of the CECC's medical response division.
The boy tested positive for COVID-19 on May 22. Nearly two months later on July 13, he developed a fever, diarrhea, bloodshot eyes, lethargy, a lack of appetite, and vomiting, Lo said.
He was admitted to hospital on July 17 and diagnosed with MIS-C, but has since recovered and been discharged, Lo said.
Another severe case is a 16-year-old who tested positive for COVID-19 on May 30. She developed a fever, stomach ache, and had lower appetite and energy levels on July 17. The girl was taken to hospital four days later.
Doctors initially diagnosed her with acute gastroenteritis and suspect she could also have MIS-C, but as she is not displaying any clinical signs of MIS-C other than stomach pain, more observation is needed, Lo said.
Currently, the girl is in a stable condition and is still in hospital, Lo added.
To date, 116 children aged 12 years old and younger and 11 adolescents aged 13-18 have developed severe illnesses from COVID-19, according to Lo.
Of the 4,376,014 domestic cases reported in Taiwan this year, 8,977 have been classified as severe infections, and 11,213 as moderate, accounting for 0.21 percent and 0.26 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of July 23.
In all other cases, infected individuals were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms, the CECC said.
