Taiwan reports 22,595 new COVID-19 cases, 53 deaths

Taipei, July 23 (CNA) Taiwan reported 22,595 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, all but 248 of which were domestic infections, and 53 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The individuals whose deaths were reported Saturday ranged in age from 30 years old to over 90.

Twenty-five of those who died were unvaccinated against COVID-19, while 49 had chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, the CECC said.

Among the four people who died and had no chronic illness or severe disease, three were unvaccinated, while one had been fully vaccinated and had a COVID-19 vaccine booster, according to the CECC.

Also on Saturday, the CECC said that 56 previously reported COVID-19 cases had become severe, while 115 other individuals had developed moderate symptoms.

They included five new cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).

To date, 115 children have developed serious complications from COVID-19, of which 51 were diagnosed with MIS-C.

Of the 4,353,697 domestic cases reported in Taiwan this year, 8,896 have been classified as severe infections, and 11,158 as moderate, accounting for 0.20 percent and 0.26 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of July 22.

In all other cases, the infected individuals were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms, the CECC said.

Regional breakdown

On Saturday, New Taipei City recorded the highest number of domestic cases, with 3,688 cases, followed by Taichung with 2,878 cases, and Taoyuan with 2,303. Kaohsiung reported 2,288 cases, Taipei 2,202, Tainan 1,705, Changhua County 1,088, Pingtung County 724, Hsinchu County 637, Yilan County 600, and Yunlin County 587.

Miaoli County recorded 587 cases, Hsinchu City 549, Hualien County 478, Chiayi County 433, Nantou County 417, Keelung 337, Chiayi City 292, Taitung County 261, Kinmen County 136, Penghu County 130, the Matsu Islands 27.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 4,408,857 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 4,390,617 domestic infections.

With the 53 deaths reported Saturday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 8,531.
