Taiwan reports 27,196 new COVID-19 cases, 57 deaths

Taipei, July 20 (CNA) Taiwan reported 27,196 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, all but 253 of which were domestic infections, and 57 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The deceased ranged in age from their 40s to over 90. Twenty-five of those who died were unvaccinated, while 54 had chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, the CECC said. Among the three who had no chronic illness or severe diseases, one had received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and two had gotten three doses, the CECC said.

Severe, moderate infections

Also on Wednesday, the CECC said that 49 previously reported COVID-19 cases had become severe, while 53 other individuals had developed moderate symptoms.

Of the 4,278,114 domestic cases reported in Taiwan this year, 8,644 have been classified as severe infections, and 10,830 as moderate, accounting for 0.20 percent and 0.25 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of July 19.

In all other cases, the infected individuals were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms, the CECC said.

Regional breakdown

New Taipei recorded the highest number of domestic cases Wednesday, with 4,614, followed by Taichung with 3,415, and Taoyuan with 3,004.

Taipei recorded 2,751 cases, Kaohsiung 2,703, Tainan 1,979, Changhua County 1,236, Pingtung County 833, Miaoli County 761, Hsinchu County 756, Yunlin County 681, Yilan County 665, and Hsinchu City 643.

Hualien County reported 536 cases, Chiayi County 519, Nantou County 428, Keelung 411, Taitung County 352, Chiayi City 295, Kinmen County 185, Penghu County 141, and the Matsu Islands 35.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 4,337,076 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 4,319,633 domestic infections.

With the 57 deaths reported Wednesday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 8,318.
