Taiwan reports 29,911 new COVID-19 cases, 49 deaths

Taipei, July 13 (CNA) Taiwan reported 29,911 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, all but 62 of which were domestic infections, and 49 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The number of deaths was the lowest reported in a single day since May 25, the CECC said.

The individuals whose deaths were reported on Wednesday ranged in age from their 40s to over 90. Twenty of those who died were unvaccinated, while 48 had chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, the CECC said.

The sole patient with no chronic illnesses or severe diseases had been unvaccinated, according to the CECC.

Severe, moderate infections

Also on Wednesday, the CECC said that 46 previously reported COVID-19 cases had become severe, while 87 other individuals had developed moderate symptoms.

Of the 4,101,864 domestic cases reported in Taiwan this year, 8,108 have been classified as severe infections, and 10,349 as moderate, accounting for 0.20 percent and 0.25 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of July 12.

In all other cases, the infected individuals were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms, the CECC said.

Regional breakdown

New Taipei recorded the highest number of domestic cases Wednesday, with 4,997 cases, followed by Taichung with 3,941 cases and Taoyuan with 3,219.

Kaohsiung recorded 3,115 cases, Taipei 2,982, Tainan 2,244, Changhua County 1,497, Pingtung County 1,075, Miaoli County 785, Yunlin County 779, and Hsinchu County 734.

Hsinchu City reported 671 cases, Yilan County 657, Chiayi County 573, Nantou County 560, Hualien County 487, Keelung 427, Taitung County 420, Chiayi City 324, Kinmen County 182, Penghu County 145, and Matsu Islands 35.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 4,162,290 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 4,146,266 domestic infections.

With the 49 deaths reported Wednesday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 7,829.
