
Taiwan reports 31,297 new COVID-19 cases, 60 deaths

Taipei, July 12 (CNA) Taiwan on Tuesday reported 31,297 new cases of COVID-19, all but 145 of which were domestic infections, and 60 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The individuals whose deaths were reported Tuesday ranged in age from their 30s to their 90s. Thirty-three of those who died were unvaccinated, while 57 had chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, the CECC said.
The three deceased individuals who had no chronic illnesses or severe diseases included two who were unvaccinated and one who had received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, according to the CECC.
One of the unvaccinated individuals, a man in his 30s, was taken to the emergency room on June 30 after developing symptoms including respiratory difficulties, stomach pain, and vomiting, Lo Yi-chun (羅一鈞), deputy head of the CECC's medical response division, said at a press briefing.
While in the ER, the man went into cardiac arrest and was transferred to an intensive care unit, where he died on July 9 of heart and liver failure and acute kidney damage, Lo said, adding that the man may have suffered from an undiagnosed heart condition.
Severe, moderate infections
Also on Tuesday, the CECC said that 61 previously reported COVID-19 cases had become severe, while 43 other individuals had developed moderate symptoms.
Of the 4,070,736 domestic cases reported in Taiwan this year, 8,050 have been classified as severe infections and 10,274 as moderate, accounting for 0.20 percent and 0.25 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of July 11.
Regional breakdown
In terms of the regional breakdown, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases Tuesday with 4,823, followed by Taichung with 4,030 and Kaohsiung with 3,555.
Taoyuan reported 2,858 cases, Taipei 2,808, Tainan 2,592, Changhua 1,655, Pingtung 1,168, Yunlin 1,033, Miaoli 902, Chiayi County 797, Yilan 760, Hsinchu County 728, Nantou 617, Hualien 554 and Taitung 506.
Hsinchu City recorded 502 cases, Chiayi City 425, Keelung 390, Kinmen 223, Penghu 182, and the Matsu Islands 44, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 4,132,429 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 4,116,467 domestic infections.
With the 60 deaths reported Tuesday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in Taiwan rose to 7,780.
