Taipei, July 11 (CNA) Taiwan reported 19,131 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, all but 80 of which were domestic infections, and 96 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

It was the first time in over 60 days the number of daily cases fell below 20,000. The CECC said, however, that the numbers are usually lower on Monday, as fewer tests are conducted and reported over the weekend.

The individuals whose deaths were reported Monday ranged in age from their 20s to over 90. Forty-nine of those who died were unvaccinated, while 94 had chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, the CECC said.

The two patients who had no chronic illnesses or severe diseases had both received three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, according to the CECC.

Severe, moderate infections

Also on Monday, the CECC said that 86 previously reported COVID-19 cases had become severe, while 86 other individuals had developed moderate symptoms.

Meanwhile, the CECC said that a 15-year-old COVID-19 patient, who has a chronic neurological disorder and requires long-term oxygen support, is still in intensive care but is in stable condition, after she was hospitalized on July 7 with low blood oxygen levels, pneumonia, and sepsis.

To date, 10 adolescents in Taiwan, aged 13-18, have developed severe cases of COVID-19, and four of them have died.

Of the 4,051,689 domestic cases reported in Taiwan this year, 7,989 have been classified as severe infections and 10,243 as moderate, accounting for 0.20 percent and 0.25 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of July 10.

In all other cases, the infected individuals were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms, the CECC said.
