Taiwan reports 28,135 new COVID-19 cases, 94 deaths

Taipei, July 9 (CNA) Taiwan recorded 28,135 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday -- 28,028 domestic and 107 imported infections -- as well as 94 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The deceased ranged in age from their 30s to over 90. Forty-five of those who died were unvaccinated against COVID-19, while 18 had received one or two doses of a vaccine and 91 had chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, the CECC said.

Among those who died were also one person who had received one dose of vaccine and another who had received three doses, with neither of the two having any serious or chronic illness.

Also on Saturday, the CECC said that 196 previously reported COVID-19 cases had developed into moderate to severe infections.

Of the 3,995,969 domestic cases reported in Taiwan this year, 7,781 have been classified as severe infections, and 10,071 as moderate, accounting for 0.19 percent and 0.25 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of July 8.

In all other cases, the infected individuals were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms, the CECC said.

 



The figures do not include imported cases reclassified as domestic ones, nor retroactively removed cases. As of July 9, Taiwan recorded 4,023,984 domestic cases in 2022, while the total number of imported cases rose to 15,548 from 2,396 on Jan. 1.

On Saturday, New Taipei recorded the highest number of domestic cases, with 4,122, followed by Taichung with 3,576, and Kaohsiung with 3,119.

Taoyuan reported 2,822 new cases, Taipei 2,612, Tainan 2,266, Changhua County 1,565, Pingtung County 1,165, Yunlin County 817, Miaoli County 722, and Hsinchu County 713.

Yilan County recorded 701 new cases, Chiayi County 637, Nantou County 549, Hualien County 542, Hsinchu City 531, Taitung County 409, Keelung 391, Chiayi City 337, Penghu County 210, Kinmen County 194, and the Matsu Islands 28.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 4,054,189 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 4,038,587 domestic infections.

With the 94 deaths reported on Saturday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 7,553.
