Taipei, June 11 (CNA) Taiwan's death toll from COVID-19 surpassed 200 for a third day in a row on Saturday as 211 deaths from the disease were reported by the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) along with 79,663 new COVID-19 cases.

The 211 deaths reported Saturday were just shy of the record single-day high of 213 reported Friday and brought the total number of people in Taiwan who have died of COVID-19 complications since the pandemic began more than two years ago to 4,008, according to CECC data.

The deaths reported Saturday involved people ranging in age from their 30s to over 90, and included 198 who had chronic illnesses or other severe diseases and 94 who had not received any doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, the CECC said.

Beyond the deaths, the CECC said 185 previously reported COVID-19 cases had developed into severe infections, and another 261 had developed moderate symptoms of the disease.

Among the new severe cases were five children aged 2-10, who have been diagnosed with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), said Lo Yi-chun (羅一鈞), deputy head of the CECC's medical response division at a daily COVID-19 press briefing.

Taiwan now has recorded a total of eight MIS-C cases, according to Lo.

Of the 79,663 new COVID-19 cases reported Saturday, 79,598 were domestic and 65 imported, according to CECC data.

Kaohsiung reported the highest number of new domestic cases, 13,047, followed by Taichung with 11,341, and New Taipei with 10,728.

Tainan recorded 7,038 cases, Taoyuan 6,487, Changhua County 5,991, Taipei 5,384, Pingtung County 3,369, Yunlin County 2,027, Hsinchu County 1,842, Miaoli County 1,812, Nantou County 1,584, Chiayi County 1,583, Hsinchu City 1,490, and Yilan County 1,331.

Hualien County reported 1,074, Keelung 1,022, Taitung County 959, Chiayi City 951, Penghu County 283, Kinmen County 229, and the Matsu Islands 26.

The figures do not include imported cases reclassified as domestic ones, nor retroactively removed cases. As of June 11, Taiwan recorded 2,813,617 domestic cases in 2022, while the total number of imported cases rose to 13,422 from 2,396 on Jan. 1.

Of the 2,724,066 domestic cases reported in Taiwan this year, 3,681 have been classified as severe infections and 5,957 as moderate, accounting for 0.135 percent and 0.218 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of June 10.

In all other cases, the patients were either asymptomatic or had mild infections, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 2,841,696 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 2,828,220 domestic infections and the rest imported from abroad.
