Taipei, June 9 (CNA) Taiwan reported 72,967 new COVID-19 cases -- 72,921 domestically transmitted and 46 imported infections -- and 211 deaths from the disease on Thursday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The 211 deaths were another single-day high, surpassing the 159 recorded Wednesday, CECC data showed.

The deceased, ranging in age from 17 to over 90, included 197 who had chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, and 83 who had been unvaccinated, the CECC said.

The 17-year-old had a neurological disorder and developed COVID-19 symptoms on May 30. He passed away June 1 in hospital, due to septic shock, according to the CECC.

The CECC also said that 191 previously reported COVID-19 cases had since developed into severe infections, while 384 other patients had developed moderate symptoms of the disease.

Among the new severe cases is a 5-year-old, who was diagnosed with multisystem inflammatory syndrome-children (MIS-C), the second MIS-C case recorded in Taiwan, the CECC said.

Of the 2,593,010 domestic cases reported in Taiwan this year, 3,188 have been classified as severe infections and 5,451 as moderate, accounting for 0.12 percent and 0.21 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of June 8.

In all other cases, the patients were either asymptomatic or had mild infections, the CECC said.

The figures do not include imported cases reclassified as domestic ones, nor retroactively removed cases. As of June 9, Taiwan recorded 2,680,412 domestic cases in 2022, while the total number of imported cases rose to 13,321 from 2,396 on Jan. 1.

On Thursday, Kaohsiung reported the highest number of new domestic cases, 10,822, followed by Taichung with 10,570, and New Taipei with 10,201.

Tainan recorded 6,355 cases, Taoyuan 6,298, Changhua 5,266, Taipei 5,129, Pingtung County 3,130, Hsinchu County 1,783, Yunlin County 1,717, Miaoli County 1,712, Hsinchu City 1,525, Nantou County 1,480, Chiayi County 1,405, and Yilan County 1,285.

Hualien County reported 1,127, Keelung 983, Chiayi City 937, Taitung County 792, Penghu County 250, Kinmen County 149, and the Matsu Islands five.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 2,693,787 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 2,680,412 domestic infections.

With the 211 deaths reported Thursday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 3,584, CECC data showed.
