
Taiwan reports 53,023 new COVID-19 cases, 151 deaths

Taipei, June 6 (CNA) Taiwan reported 53,023 new COVID-19 cases -- 52,992 domestically transmitted and 31 imported infections -- and 151 deaths from the disease on Monday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The 151 people who died of COVID-19 complications ranged in age from 8 months to over 90 years. Sixty-four were unvaccinated, and 146 had chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, the CECC said.
Two of them were children, an 8-month-old girl and a 15-year-old boy, the CECC said. To date, one teenager and 16 children under the age of 13 have died of COVID-19 in Taiwan, according to the CECC.
On Monday, the CECC also said that 119 previously reported COVID-19 cases had since developed into severe infections, while 124 other patients had developed moderate symptoms of the disease.
Of the 2,377,053 domestic cases recorded in Taiwan this year, 2,618 have been classified as severe infections and 4,910 as moderate, accounting for 0.11 percent and 0.21 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of June 5.
In all other cases, the patients were either asymptomatic or had mild infections, the CECC said.
Of the domestic cases reported Monday, New Taipei had the highest number, with 7,703, followed by Kaohsiung with 7,506, and Taichung with 7,037.
Taoyuan reported 5,162 cases, Tainan 4,426, Taipei 3,765, Changhua County 3,726, Pingtung County 2,213, Hsinchu County 1,543, Miaoli County 1,377, Yunlin County 1,168, Nantou County 1,128, Hsinchu City 1,028, and Keelung 1,021.
Hualien County recorded 931 cases, Yilan County 874, Chiayi County 837, Chiayi City 557, Taitung County 550, Kinmen County 203, Penghu County 196, and the Matsu Islands 41.

The figures do not include imported cases reclassified as domestic ones, nor retroactively removed cases. As of June 5, Taiwan recorded 2,444,635 domestic cases in 2022, while the total number of imported cases rose to 13,192 from 2,396 on Jan. 1.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 2,457,881 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 2,444,635 domestic infections.
With the 151 deaths reported Monday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 3,090, CECC data showed.
