Taiwan reports 65,833 new COVID-19 cases, 38 deaths

Taipei, May 17 (CNA) Taiwan recorded over 60,000 new COVID-19 cases for the sixth straight day on Tuesday, reporting 65,833 new infections and 38 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The new cases consisted of 65,794 domestically transmitted infections and 39 that were contracted abroad, the CECC said.

The 38 people who died were individuals in their 30s to 90s, and 18 of them were unvaccinated, the CECC said.

All but one of the patients had chronic illnesses or suffered from severe diseases such as cancer, it said.

The only exception was a woman in her 70s who was unvaccinated.

The youngest people who died were two women in their 30s who had cancer, according to CECC data.

 


The CECC also reported Tuesday that an additional 22 patients had developed moderate symptoms and 39 had developed severe symptoms.

Of the 803,337 domestic cases recorded in Taiwan from Jan. 1 to May 16, 1,286 have been classified as moderate infections and 368 as severe, accounting for 0.16 percent and 0.05 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data.

In all the other cases, the patients were either asymptomatic or had only mild symptoms, the CECC said.

On Tuesday, New Taipei reported the highest number of domestic cases -- 18,400 -- followed by Taoyuan with 10,184, Taipei with 9,772, Kaohsiung with 4,979, and Taichung with 4,770.

Tainan reported 2,844 cases, Hsinchu County 2,105, Keelung 1,917, Changhua County 1,613, Pingtung County 1,536, Yilan County 1,481, Hualien County 1,200, Miaoli County 1,129, Hsinchu City 1,124, Nantou County 614, Yunlin County 581, Chiayi County 556, Taitung County 405, and Chiayi City 345.

Penghu County reported 146, Kinmen County 81, and the Matsu Islands 12.

 



The figures do not include imported cases reclassified as domestic ones, nor retroactively removed cases. As of May 17, Taiwan recorded 869,131 domestic cases in 2022, while the total number of imported cases rose to 12,301 from 2,396 on Jan. 1.

Meanwhile, of the 39 new imported cases, 18 were travelers who tested positive on arrival in Taiwan, according to the CECC.

To date, Taiwan has confirmed 896,059 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 883,704 domestically transmitted infections.

With the 38 deaths reported Tuesday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country reached 1,135, with 282 recorded this year.
