Taipei, May 11 (CNA) Former Vice President Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) will again represent Taiwan at the second annual Global COVID-19 Summit later this week and pledge a donation of US$1.5 million donation for global vaccine coverage, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Wednesday.
This year's Global COVID-19 Summit will be held on May 12, U.S. time, to discuss increasing efforts to end the pandemic internationally and prepare for future variants of the coronavirus, and Taiwan will again participate and be represented by Chen for a second time, MOFA said in a statement.
The former vice president will give a pre-recorded speech at the summit, which will be joined by U.S. President Joe Biden, it said.
According to a English language transcript of Chen's speech, the former vice president will announce that Taiwan's government will soon donate another US$1.5 million to support vaccine coverage.
Taiwan will also commit to continuing to provide medical masks, PCR testing machines, oxygen concentrators, and other supplies to countries in need, according to the transcript.
In his speech, Chen will say that COVID-19 has shown how a global health crisis not only threatens lives but can also undermine democracy, human rights, and good governance.
"The Taiwan Model is an example of how a modern democracy can work transparently using technology to fight the pandemic," Chen will say, according to the transcript.
According to a press release issued by the White House, the second edition of the summit will be co-hosted by the U.S., which chaired the first COVID summit, Belize, as CARICOM chair; Germany, which holds the G7 presidency; Indonesia, which holds the G20 presidency; and Senegal, as African Union chair.
Biden and fellow heads of state from the co-hosts will kick off the summit with remarks on how fighting COVID-19 must remain an international priority, it said.
The summit will then feature three sessions focused on getting shots in arms, expanding access to tests and treatments, and advancing health security and preventing future catastrophes.
