Taipei, May 7 (CNA) Taiwan's single-day COVID-19 case number exceeded 40,000 for the first time on Saturday, as it recorded 46,536 new cases and 11 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The new cases comprised 46,377 domestically transmitted infections and 159 contracted abroad, the CECC said.

The 11 people who died of COVID-19 complications were seven men and four women in their 40s to 90s. They tested positive between April 24 and May 3, and passed away between April 30 and May 4, according to CECC data.

The youngest was a woman in her 40s who was unvaccinated, had a history of chronic lung disease and was recently treated for sepsis, the CECC said, adding that four others were also unvaccinated.

Nine of the patients who died were over 60 years old and had underlying medical conditions, including cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, chronic lung disease, and coronary artery disease, according to CECC data.

One of them was a man in his 50s, who had a history of stroke and chronic lung disease, and had received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, the CECC said.

1. More doses of the Moderna and Pfizer-BNT vaccine have been administered in Taiwan than the government has officially received because recipients of the Moderna booster shot are given half the standard dose of the first and second jab, while medical workers can sometimes get more than the standard number of shots from a Pfizer-BNT vial. 2. The CECC also said that among the 46,536 new COVID-19 cases reported Saturday, eight were severe infections, while 44 were moderate.

Of the 242,256 domestic cases recorded in Taiwan from Jan. 1 to May 6, 504 have been classified as moderate infections and 85 as severe, accounting for 0.21 percent and 0.04 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data.

In all the other cases, the patients were either asymptomatic or had only mild symptoms, the CECC said.

Saturday's new domestic cases

On Saturday, New Taipei reported the highest number of domestic cases -- 16,670 -- followed by Taipei with 9,245, Taoyuan with 6,882, Taichung with 2,517, and Kaohsiung with 2,163.

Keelung reported 1,910 cases, Tainan 1,352, Yilan County 840, Hualien County 803, Hsinchu County 788, Pingtung County 584, Changhua County 517, Hsinchu City 457, Yunlin County 369, Miaoli County 338, Nantou County 266, Taitung County 261, and Chiayi County 188.

Chiayi City reported 110 cases, Penghu County 74, Matsu Islands 22, and Kinmen County 21.

The figures do not include imported cases reclassified as domestic ones, nor retroactively removed cases. As of May 7, Taiwan recorded 288,633 domestic cases in 2022, while the total number of imported cases rose to 11,811 from 2,396 on Jan. 1.

Meanwhile, of the 159 new imported cases, 56 were travelers who tested positive on arrival in Taiwan, according to the CECC.

To date, Taiwan has confirmed 314,983 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 303,118 domestically transmitted infections.

With the 11 deaths reported Saturday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country reached 907, with 54 recorded this year.
