Taipei, April 23 (CNA) A total of 4,204 new COVID-19 cases, including 4,126 domestically-transmitted infections, were reported in Taiwan on Saturday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The number of domestic cases set another single-day record high and marked the ninth day Taiwan has seen more than 1,000 daily local cases.

While most of the cases were either asymptomatic or mild, the CECC said that 10 patients, ranging in age from 20 to 100, had developed moderate symptoms, while one person over 60 had developed a severe infection.

Six of the 10 patients with moderate infections are unvaccinated, but four had received three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, while the patient with a severe infection also had three vaccination shots.

Of the 22,256 domestic cases recorded nationwide between Jan. 1 and April 22, seven have been classified as severe infections and 78 as moderate, together accounting for 0.38 percent of the total number of cases, while the other cases were either mild or asymptomatic, according to the CECC.

The figures do not include imported cases reclassified as domestic ones, nor retroactively removed cases. As of April 23, Taiwan recorded 26,374 domestic cases in 2022, while the total number of imported cases rose to 10,267 from 2,375 on Dec. 31, 2021.

In terms of Saturday's cases, New Taipei City reported the highest number of domestic cases, with 1,563, followed by Taipei with 945, Taoyuan with 527, and Keelung with 219.

Taichung reported 171 cases, Hualien County 138, Kaohsiung 98, Yilan County 90, Hsinchu County 57, Yunlin County 53, Hsinchu City and Tainan City 51 each, Changhua County 34, Taitung County 29, Miaoli County 28, Nantou County 26, and Pingtung County 24.

Chiayi City recorded 10 cases, Chiayi County seven, Kinmen County and Matsu Islands each reported two, while Penghu County reported one.

Of the 78 new imported cases, 58 were travelers who tested positive on arrival in Taiwan, according to the CECC.

1. More doses of the Moderna and Pfizer-BNT vaccine have been administered in Taiwan than the government has officially received because recipients of the Moderna booster shot are given half the standard dose of the first and second jab, while medical workers can sometimes get more than the standard number of shots from a Pfizer-BNT vial. 2. To date, Taiwan has confirmed 51,298 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 40,977 domestically-transmitted infections, CECC data showed.

With no deaths reported on Saturday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country remained at 856.
