Taipei, April 16 (CNA) Taiwan reported 1,351 new COVID-19 cases, including 1,199 locally-transmitted infections, on Saturday, the second day the number of new domestic cases has exceeded 1,000 since the pandemic began, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The latest cases come as the country has seen a sharp rise in the number of domestic cases since late March. Saturday's total was only slightly lower than the record single-day high of 1,209 reported on Friday.

While a vast majority of the new cases were asymptomatic or mild, 10 new moderate or serious COVID-19 cases were reported on Saturday, bringing the total of such infections to 39 for the year to date.

The CECC has been pointing to the low number of moderate or serious COVID-19 cases so far this year, which accounted for 0.5 percent of the 7,752 domestic cases between Jan. 1 and April 15, in its bid to ease public concerns over the rapid spread of the disease.

The figures do not include imported cases reclassified as domestic ones, nor retroactively removed cases. As of April 16, Taiwan recorded 8,948 domestic cases in 2022, while the total number of imported cases rose to 9,600 from 2,375 on Dec. 31.

Of the 1,199 new domestic cases reported on Saturday, New Taipei City continued to have the highest number, at 434, followed by Taipei with 206, Taoyuan with 159 and Keelung with 92, the CECC said.

Also on Saturday, Taiwan reported 152 new imported cases, of which 143 were travelers who tested positive on arrival in Taiwan, according to the CECC.

1. More doses of the Moderna and Pfizer-BNT vaccine have been administered in Taiwan than the government has officially received because recipients of the Moderna booster shot are given half the standard dose of the first and second jab, while medical workers can sometimes get more than the standard number of shots from a Pfizer-BNT vial. 2. To date, Taiwan has confirmed 33,205 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began, including 23,551 domestically-transmitted infections, according to CECC data.

With no deaths reported Saturday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country remained at 854, the data showed.
