Taiwan's new domestic COVID-19 cases rise to record 874

Taipei, April 14 (CNA) Taiwan on Thursday reported 874 new domestic COVID-19 cases, breaking its daily record for the second consecutive day, but most infections are still either mild or asymptomatic, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

New Taipei reported the highest number of domestic cases, with 360, followed by Taipei with 164, Taoyuan with 87, and Keelung with 60, the CECC said.

Hualien County recorded 46 cases, Kaohsiung 42, Taichung 25, Hsinchu County 23, Tainan 19, Yilan County 15, and Hsinchu City 11, the CECC said.

Pingtung County reported five cases, and Taitung County four, while Nantou, Changhua, and Miaoli counties each recorded three. Chiayi City reported two cases, and Yunlin and Chiayi counties one each, according to the CECC.

In total, the number of new domestic cases rose Thursday to 874 from the 744 reported the previous day, which had broken the previous one-day high of 720 on May 22, 2021.

Patients with moderate to severe infections

Of the 5,670 domestic COVID-19 cases recorded nationwide this year from Jan. 1 to April 13, 17 were classified as moderate infections and two as severe, while the others, accounting for 99.66 percent of the total, were either mild or asymptomatic, according to the CECC.

In its report Thursday, the CECC said one patient who had tested positive on April 2 had developed a moderate infection, and his oxygen levels had dropped at one point.

The patient, a Taiwanese man in his 60s, was unvaccinated, the CECC said, adding that he is now in stable condition in hospital.

Meanwhile, Taiwan recorded 108 new imported cases on Thursday, 75 of them travelers who had tested positive on arrival in the country.

To date, Taiwan has confirmed 30,574 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began, including 21,146 domestically transmitted infections, according to CECC data.

With no deaths reported Thursday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country remained at 854, the data showed.
