Taipei, April 10 (CNA) Taiwan on Sunday reported 431 new domestic COVID-19 cases, and four new patients experiencing moderate symptoms from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

It is the 10th consecutive day new domestic cases have been over 100, and the second straight day with over 400 new domestic cases.

Commenting on the new case numbers, Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) said it is possible Sunday's figures are similar to Saturday's because fewer tests are conducted over the weekend.

Case numbers could climb higher on Monday, he added.

New domestic cases

Sunday's domestic cases were spread across 18 cities and counties, with New Taipei reporting the highest number, 143, followed by Taipei with 67 and Taoyuan with 45.

Pingtung County reported 31 cases, Keelung 28, Kaohsiung 26, Tainan 20, Yilan County 14, while 13 each were reported in Hsinchu and Hualien counties.

Taichung reported eight cases, Hsinchu City seven, Chiayi City six, and Yunlin County three. Miaoli, Nantou, and Chiayi counties each recorded two cases, and one was reported in Taitung County.

Patients with moderate to severe symptoms

Of the 3,546 domestic COVID-19 cases recorded nationwide from Jan. 1 to April 9, 12 were classified as moderate infections, two as severe, while the others were either mild or asymptomatic, said Lo Yi-chun (羅一鈞), deputy head of the CECC's medical response division.

Taiwan added four patients with moderate infections on Sunday, two men in their 60s and 80s who received three COVID-19 vaccine shots, a man in his 70s who got two doses, and a woman in her 50s who is unvaccinated, Lo said.

The patients all have pneumonia, while some have also experienced lower oxygen levels, and are all currently being treated in hospital, Lo said.

According to Lo, COVID-19 patients who experience acute respiratory distress syndrome, septic shock, or need to be treated in intensive care units are categorized as severe cases, while those who have mild degrees of pneumonia or patients with an oxygen level of lower than 95 percent are classified as moderate cases.

Meanwhile, 144 new imported cases were recorded Sunday, including 83 travelers who tested positive on arrival in Taiwan, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has confirmed 27,410 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 18,579 domestically transmitted infections, according to CECC data.

With no deaths reported Sunday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country remained at 854.
