Taipei, April 6 (CNA) Taiwan reported 359 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday -- 281 domestically transmitted and 78 imported - and no new deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The domestic case total exceeded 100 for the sixth consecutive day and was also the highest daily number this year, breaking the previous high of 216 recorded Tuesday.

New Taipei had the highest number of cases, with 115, followed by Taipei with 45, and Kaohsiung with 37, the CECC said.

Keelung recorded 26 cases, Taoyuan 17, Hsinchu County 12, Hualien eight, and Hsinchu City six, the CECC said.

Yilan confirmed four cases, while Taichung, Changhua and Chiayi each reported two, and Miaoli, Yunlin, Tainan, Pingtung and Taitung each recorded one, the CECC said.

The new domestic cases included 163 that were not immediately linked to any existing clusters, the CECC said.

Of the 2,061 domestic cases recorded between Jan. 1 and April 5, only five were moderate to severe infections, while the others were either mild or asymptomatic, according to the CECC.

The figures do not include imported cases reclassified as domestic ones, nor retroactively removed cases. As of April 6, Taiwan recorded 2,342 domestic cases in 2022, while the total number of imported cases rose to 8,226 from 2,375 on Dec. 31.

Meanwhile, 78 new imported cases were reported on Wednesday, and 27 of them were travelers who tested positive on arrival in Taiwan, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has confirmed 25,225 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 16,945 domestically transmitted infections, according to CECC data.

With no deaths reported on Wednesday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country remained at 853, the data showed.

1. More doses of the Moderna and Pfizer-BNT vaccine have been administered in Taiwan than the government has officially received because recipients of the Moderna booster shot are given half the standard dose of the first and second jab, while medical workers can sometimes get more than the standard number of shots from a Pfizer-BNT vial. 2.
