Taipei, March 10 (CNA) Taiwan reported no new domestically transmitted COVID-19 cases for the first time in over two months on Thursday, though four clusters are still being monitored, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The fact that Taiwan recorded zero new domestic cases "can make everyone happy for a day, but we still need to do the work to keep the COVID-19 situation under control day by day," Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) said at a press briefing.
According to the CECC, Taiwan last reported zero new domestic cases on Jan. 1.
Although no domestic cases were reported initially on Jan. 2 and Jan. 3, an imported case recorded on Jan. 2 was later reclassified as domestically transmitted, and the CECC released a statement late on the evening on Jan. 3 stating that a janitor at Taoyuan International Airport had tested positive for COVID-19.
The janitor was only given an official patient number on Jan. 4 and included in that day's case count, but as Jan. 3 was the day her case was announced, there was technically a domestic case recorded on Jan. 3, the CECC said.
Currently, four clusters in the country are still being monitored by the CECC, of which three have unknown sources of infection, CECC data shows.
The clusters of unknown origin are one involving a family in the Greater Taipei area and their contacts, which has recorded eight cases to date; one focused on four schools in Taoyuan, which totals 34 cases; and one involving a family in Kaohsiung and a tour group, which has reported 20 cases.
The cluster with a known source began with a woman who returned from the United States and infected her sister, who delivered her meals in quarantine. It has recorded five cases to date.
Although no new domestic cases were reported Thursday, Taiwan recorded 82 new imported cases, including 65 travelers who tested positive on arrival in the country. The CECC did not release any information regarding the vaccination status of the imported cases.
To date, Taiwan has confirmed 21,081 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 15,475 domestically transmitted infections.
With no deaths reported Thursday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country remains at 853.
