Taipei, Feb. 28 (CNA) Taiwan received its third shipment of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine this year early Monday morning, which comprised 1.2246 million doses.

The China Airlines cargo plant, coded CI-5245, that carried the vaccine doses landed on Taoyuan International Airport at 1:49 a.m. Monday, a few hours of delay from its original schedule.

The flight was scheduled to arrive at 8:45 p.m. Sunday after taking off in Atlanta, the United States, at 6:03 p.m. Saturday (local time), and having a stopover in Anchorage.

According to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC), the shipment is part of the second agreement Taiwan signed with Moderna in July 2021 to procure 35 million doses for 2022-2023, 20 million of which are set to be delivered this year.

With the latest shipment, Taiwan has received 4.1415 million Moderna doses under the agreement, the CECC said.

The newly delivered doses are due to expire on Aug. 5, the CECC said.

CECC data as of Saturday shows that 82.79 percent of Taiwan's population of 23.35 million have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine shot, while 76.70 percent have gotten two doses.

Since the introduction of a third dose in late December, 40.19 percent of the population have received a booster dose, and 0.81 percent have been given an additional dose, which are third shots given to immunocompromised people who may not develop the same immune response level after vaccination as others.
