Taipei, Sept. 5 (CNA) Taiwan received on Sunday a shipment of 410,400 doses of the AstraZeneca (AZ) COVID-19 vaccine, the third batch delivered through the COVAX global vaccine distribution program.
The shipment arrived at the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport at 3:52 p.m. After clearing customs, the vaccine doses were transported to a designated cold storage logistics center for examination.
The new batch is part of a total of 4.76 million vaccine doses that Taiwan has purchased from COVAX, according to Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時ä¸), who heads the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
This brings the total number of AZ doses Taiwan has obtained from the COVAX platform to 1.02 million -- including the first batch of 199,200 doses delivered on April 4 and the second batch of 410,400 doses on May 19 -- Chen said at the CECC's daily press briefing.
The latest batch from COVAX will be effective until Nov. 30 this year, the same as the 400,000 doses of AZ vaccines donated by Poland, which Taiwan also received earlier in the day, he said.
Both AZ vaccine batches are likely to be reserved for people who are due to receive their second shot, Chen said without further elaboration.
