Taipei, Aug. 14 (CNA) Taiwan on Saturday saw another day with single-digit domestic COVID-19 cases, an indication the country is able to keep the disease under control, according to Health Minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時中).
Chen, who also heads the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC), believes the disease can be contained because local governments are now able to quickly identify sources of infection, thereby minimizing the risk of any potential spread.
According to the CECC, Taiwan reported seven new cases of COVID-19 -- three transmitted domestically and four contracted overseas -- and two deaths from the disease.
It was the third consecutive day Taiwan has recorded single-digit numbers of domestic transmission cases.
Two of the domestic cases were reported in New Taipei, and one in Taipei, the CECC said.
Health authorities have identified the source of infection in two of the cases and are looking into the source of the other one, the health minister said.
With regards to the four imported COVID-19 cases, two were Taiwanese nationals in their 20s who recently returned to the country from Russia and Vietnam, while two others were nationals from the Philippines and Vietnam, the CECC said.
According to the CECC, the four people all tested positive for COVID-19 near the end of their mandatory 14-day quarantine in Taiwan.
The new cases bring the total in Taiwan to 15,843, of which 14,303 are domestic infections reported since May 15, when the country first recorded more than 100 COVID-19 cases in a single day.
The deaths reported Saturday were one male and one female, in their 50s and 90s, who passed away on June 21 and July 12, respectively, the CECC said.
To date, 821 people have died of COVID-19 in Taiwan, including 809 since May 15.
The CECC also reminded the public to pay attention to personal hygiene, wear a face mask, minimize unnecessary outdoor activities and avoid large gatherings.
