Taipei, July 13 (CNA) Taiwan on Tuesday reported 29 new cases of COVID-19, including 28 domestic cases identified in northern and central Taiwan, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

Among the new domestic cases, 15 were reported in New Taipei, nine were reported in Taipei and two were reported in Taoyuan, while Taichung and Miaoli County each recorded one case, Health Minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時中), who also heads the CECC, said at a press briefing.

The source of infection in three of the cases could not be determined and nine cases were still being investigated, but Chen said COVID-19 in the country remained under control.

The new cases brought the total in the country to 15,302, of which about 13,800 are domestic infections reported since May 15, when the country first recorded more than 100 COVID-19 cases in a single day.

As of Tuesday, 84.7 percent, or 11,901, of those whose infections were confirmed between May 11 and July 7, had been discharged after making a full recovery from the disease or being ruled by doctors to be no longer infectious, Chen said.

Another 735 people have died since May 15, giving a relatively high death rate as a percentage of confirmed cases of about 5.4 percent.

But no information was provided on the situations of those who have yet to recover and how many are still in intensive care units.

The deaths reported Tuesday were four men and two women, aged from 60 to more than 80, and they passed away between July 4 and July 12, the CECC said.

Also on Tuesday, Taiwan confirmed one imported case involving a Taiwanese man in his 40s and who returned from Indonesia on June 30 with a valid negative COVID-19 test result, according to the CECC.

He tested positive for the virus during his quarantine period, the CECC said, adding that those who took the same flight as the infected man are currently in quarantine.
