Taipei, July 11 (CNA) The COVID-19 vaccination rate in Taiwan has now reached just over 14 percent, with 3.482 million people having received at least one shot, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said Sunday.

On Saturday, 125,000 people across the country received their jabs, as Taiwan prepared to step up the pace with a new online system for vaccination appointments that was designed by Minister Without Portfolio Audrey Tang(唐鳳), according to the CECC.

The new system was launched July 8 and will be open until 5 p.m. Monday for bookings by people aged 50 and older and those over the age of 18 who are at high risk of COVID-19 because of serious illnesses or rare diseases, the CECC said.

People in the younger age category must have recent medical records to prove their illness, according to the CECC.

Only people who receive text messages between July 13 and July 15 can make vaccination appointments.

Those who register successfully, opting for the AstraZeneca brand for vaccination, will receive their shots by July 16, the CECC said, adding that only the AstraZeneca brand will be available over the next three weeks.

As of Saturday, the total number of people in Taiwan who had received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose had increased to 3.482 million, which translated into a national coverage rate of 14.56 percent, according to the CECC.
