Taipei, July 7 (CNA) Some 410,000 doses of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine that Taiwan received recently from the American manufacturer have been inspected and are ready for distribution, Taiwan's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said Wednesday.

The shipment of vaccines, Taiwan's third batch procured from Moderna, arrived on June 30 and has an expiry date of Jan. 6, 2022, according to the FDA.

Using a sample of 600 doses, the FDA said, it carried out inspection and tests on the latest batch of Moderna vaccines, which totaled 409,800 doses, and health authorities can now begin distribution.

Taiwan has purchased 5.05 million doses of the Moderna vaccine and took delivery of a total 390,000 doses in two shipments, in late May and mid-June.

In June, it has also received 2.5 million of the vaccine donated by the United States government.

Taiwan has signed contracts to purchase nearly 20 million vaccines from abroad, including 5.05 million doses of Moderna, 10 million of AstraZeneca, and 4.76 million doses of unspecified brands through the COVAX program.

It has also signed contracts to buy 10 million doses of vaccines from two domestic companies.

Earlier Wednesday, Taiwan took delivery of another shipment of vaccines -- 626,000 doses of AstraZeneca it has purchased from the British-Swedish pharmaceutical company.

The shipment is part of a 10 million dose purchasing contract Taiwan signed with AstraZeneca on Oct. 30, 2020.

Prior to Wednesday, Taiwan had received 117,000 doses of AstraZeneca purchased from the manufacturer in March, 199,200 doses obtained through COVAX in April, and another 410,400 doses delivered via COVAX on May 19.

In addition, Taiwan received a donation of 1.24 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine from Japan in early June and is scheduled to get another donation of 1.13 million shots of the same brand on Thursday, also from Japan.
