Taipei, July 4 (CNA) Taoyuan on Sunday reported three new domestic COVID-19 cases, including two linked to a cluster at Taoyuan Armed Forces General Hospital in northern Taiwan.

The three new cases involved people aged in their 50s to 90s, bringing the total number reported in the city to 832, with 327 in quarantine, Taoyuan Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan (鄭文燦) said at a news briefing Sunday.

Two of the new local cases were a caregiver and family member of patients at the hospital who were confirmed as having COVID-19 after taking a second test for the virus at the end of quarantine. However, they pose a low risk of community transmission and so is no need to publicize their movements, according to Cheng.

The addition of the two cases brought the total for the hospital cluster infection to 38, including three nurses, their six family members, 13 patients, 11 caregivers and five family members who looked after patients.

To prevent further spread of the disease, the city is working with the hospital to enforce tightened quarantine of COVID-19 patient close contacts and expand screening and testing for the virus, Cheng said.

Only after coronavirus cases linked to the hospital go down to zero, will it be allowed to gradually resume normal operations, he added.

Another new case reported Sunday in Taoyuan is a relative of an individual previously confirmed with COVID-19. The family member was under quarantine before being diagnosed with the virus, Cheng noted.

Meanwhile, Cheng said that that the city has compiled a list of 63,662 seniors aged 73-78 who are eligible for the current round of COVID-19 vaccinations that started in July, of which 43,995 have so far received a vaccine shot, equating to a vaccination rate of 69.1 percent.
