Taipei, May 31 (CNA) New COVID-19 testing sites will soon be set up in five Taiwanese airports to prevent potential passengers from carrying the disease to the country's offshore islands, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said Monday.

According to the CECC, the testing sites will include Taipei Songshan Airport, Taichung International Airport, Chiayi Airport, Tainan Airport and Kaohsiung International Airport.

Health minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時中), who heads the CECC, said passengers flying to any of the offshore islands from the five airports will need to fill in a health declaration form before boarding their flights.

Anyone showing symptoms will not be allowed to fly and will have to take a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test at the scene, then return home to await the results, Chen said.

People who have had symptoms within the last 14 days, meanwhile, will still be required to prove that they are no longer infected by receiving a rapid COVID-19 test at the airports, he said.

Should the test be positive, the individual will also have to take a PCR test and be taken to a government-designated facility or a quarantine hotel arranged by local health authorities, Chen said.
