Taiwan reports 286 new domestic COVID-19 cases, one death

Taipei, May 20 (CNA) Taiwan on Thursday confirmed 295 new cases of COVID-19, of which 286 were classified as domestic infections, as well as one death from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The new domestic cases included 157 in New Taipei City, 87 in Taipei, 17 in Taoyuan and eight in Yilan, Health Minister Chen Shih- chung (陳時中) said at a press conference.

Six of the cases occured in Changhua, five were in Keelung, with two each in Taichung and Kaohsiung, as well as one each in Hsinchu and Yunlin, said Chen, who also heads the CECC.

Sixty of the cases were linked to a cluster involving hostess teahouses in Taipei's Wanhua District, while another 84 cases had recently visited the Wanhua area, he said.

The CECC said 63 of the cases were of uncertain origin and that 28 were still under investigation.

The one death is a woman in her 70s working in Wanhua, who started showing suspected symptoms on May 15 but refused to seek medical treatment, the CECC said.

Family members of the woman then lost contact with her and later found her dead in her residence, where she lived alone, on May 17.

She was tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, the CECC said.

The new imported cases consisted of six from the Philippines, one from Indonesia, one from the United States and one from South Africa, the CECC said.

The new infections on Thursday brought the total number of cases in the country to 2,825, of which 1,512 have been domestic infections reported since May 15, according to CECC data.
