Taipei, May 13 (CNA) In the wake of the escalating community spread of COVID-19 in Taiwan, the Cabinet on Thursday introduced a draft amendment that will increase a special budget to support economic relief measures designed to ease the impact of the virus on Taiwan's economy to NT$630 billion (US$22.6 billion).
The increase is necessary because Taiwan faces a more severe COVID-19 situation, according to Cabinet Spokesman Lo Ping-cheng (羅秉成).
Taiwan tightened disease control measures earlier this week after reporting several domestically transmitted cases with unknown sources.
The budget of the Special Act for Prevention, Relief and Revitalization Measures for Severe Pneumonia with Novel Pathogens was NT$210 billion when it was first introduced last year.
However, the budget has since received two additional increases and is currently NT$420 billion, Lo said.
In addition, Thursday's draft amendment would also extend the Act by another year, as it was scheduled to expire on June 30.
It is hoped the bill will clear the Legislature by the end of May to provide the local economy with timely support, according to Lo Chih-cheng (羅致政), a lawmaker with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party.
